Specialized Training:
My area of specialty is working to support women coping with substance use issues. I have been trained using a cognitive-behavioral model, with a focus on working together, in partnership to explore the role of substance use in one’s life, as well as the need to work on developing alternative, healthier coping strategies. This work focuses on one’s strengths, past successes, future goals, and relapse prevention strategies in order to work towards making and maintaining change.
I am also available to support people who are coping with family members struggling with addiction and mental health issues, using a model that focuses on individual strengths, and goals while recognizing the challenges of stigma.
My counseling style includes a motivational interviewing approach that emphasizes collaboration in exploring one’s personal goals, values and dreams.
Personal Statement:
I have specialized in both addictions and mental health for 20 years at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. I worked for many years counseling and managing a women’s addiction program. I have been part of on-going trainings to learn and facilitate motivational interviewing workshops for people working in health care. In this approach, there is the recognition that people are frequently ambivalent about change. It is important to recognize that the path to change can be very challenging, as well as very hopeful. It is an honor to be a part of a person’s life as one works towards change. Both individual counseling and group workshops will be available for women making change in their lives, including career, relationship, health, lifestyle issues.
