Specialized Training:
I began working in the field of social work in 1987 and completed a Masters degree in Clinical Social Work, (counseling families, groups and individuals) in 1991. I wrote my master's thesis on Male Survivors of Sexual Abuse.
I worked front line in child welfare doing investigations, assessments and long term counselling with families. I worked on the Sexual Abuse Treatment Team with individuals and groups. I was a manager for both Children's Services and Family Service Teams.
I use techniques from various theoretical perspectives including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, EMDR and Solution Focused Therapy.
Personal Statement:
I specialize in providing counselling for anger management, conflict resolution, family violence, parenting, sexual abuse, anxiety, depression, stress management, burnout and chronic pain.
In family counselling, I work with children (from age 6) and adolescents individually and with their parents. Individually, I focus on techniques for expressing feelings in a healthy manner. With parents, I focus on parenting strategies and skills to improve communication between the parents and their children.
In marriage and couple counselling, I focus on concrete ways to improve active listening skills, contain conflict and rebuild the feelings of love and trust.
With clients who have been physically, sexually, or verbally abused, I use a feminist approach and examine the abuse of power. I combine various theoretical perspectives in working with all of my clients, focusing on what works best for each individual.
