Specialized Training:
From the time of my university training and twenty-six years of practice I have developed expertise in the field of bereavement. I have educated myself on multi aspects of grief and bereavement. I attend conferences, read books, articles, research and the literature. I have developed groups and facilitated. I have compiled a library and provide handout information and community resources for support. I have presented workshops and seminars on these topics as well as being interviewed on the radio. I have worked in palliative care and bereavement and developed and implemented numerous programs.
Personal Statement:
I returned to academics as a mature adult, completing my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and my Bachelor of Social Work over a ten year period in a part-time program. I worked full time during this period, while raising my three children. After some years of practice in the field, I returned to school yet again to complete my Master of Social Work, this time over an eight month period. I have struggled with many health issues, both personally and within my family, and provided caregiving responsibilities to my elderly parents and aunts, and more recently to my daughter, until their deaths. As an active caregiver-grandparent during this time, I fell into the " 'club' sandwich" generation. I had the privilege of liberating relatives from a suppressed regime, and assisted them both within their homeland and adjusting to life in Canada. My life experiences have promoted a compassion and understanding of the multiple life challenges that people face. It is meaningful to me if I can make a difference in someone's life to promote resilience and empowerment.
